Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
